Can temporary warehouses be used long-term?

22nd August 2013

Can and do companies use temporary warehouses on a long-term basis? Or, even as an alternative to a more permanent building? Its a good question to ask because if the answer is yes then there are major up-front and ongoing cost and time savings to be gained.

A question we are asked a lot by prospects looking at longer term or permanent warehousing and storage arrangements.

Although classed as ‘temporary’ these temporary warehouse buildings can be used short or long-term. In-fact, many businesses are now using them as an alternative to the long-term investment of bricks and mortar.

So how and when can temporary warehouses be used as a permanent solution?

It’s actually the quick and easy method of installation that leads to the ‘temporary’ classification as it also allows for quick and easy dismantle and removal. This doesn’t however mean they can’t be left in place and used long-term, which is what the adherence to BS 6399 allows.

Long standing clients of Aganto, Travis Perkins, have chosen to use Aganto temporary warehouses on numerous sites throughout the country as opposed to investing in more traditional structures.

This group-wide strategy has benefitted the business in several ways.

Multiple temporary warehouses equals multiple savings

Travis Perkins now has thirteen Aganto buildings in various branches throughout the UK. The supply and installation of all of these takes weeks as opposed to months or even years with permanent buildings.

The direct up-front cost savings by using temporary warehouses in terms of no foundations, minimal equipment and labour are major. We have had customers say they achieve savings of up to 70% when compared to a more traditional building. Times this by thirteen and it starts to mean something.

More indirect but ongoing savings are achieved by the huge difference in lead times and installation processes.

If we have a building in stock, we have been known to have a temporary warehouse in situ and ready to use in less than two weeks from initial enquiry.

Compare this to the six months or more for a traditional building and the time consuming design process, ground preparation, construction and snagging and you can see how a company needing multiple buildings would opt for temporary warehouses.

Multiple savings equals re-investment and growth

It’s the low up-front costs and fast lead times combined with ongoing savings that enables companies to get fast, healthy returns that can then be ploughed back into the business.

All of which can only benefit customers with fast, efficient response times and ongoing improvement in processes, equipment and customer service.

So can temporary warehouses be used long-term?

Yes they can. And, temporary warehouses have been proven to work instead of permanent solutions with major cost savings that can lead to faster business growth, improvement and increased customer loyalty.
