Need some extensions?

25th July 2013

Writing this post in the blistering heat wave we’ve been having makes you forget about the true UK weather – rain! Because of our climate along with tightening regulations and expectations, businesses have needed to ensure all loading and handling activity is done undercover. The best way to achieve this is with warehouse and loading bay canopy extensions that can act as holding areas or covered loading/unloading space. And, one of the best loading bay canopies available today in terms of cost, ease and speed are aluminium framed structures.

With the recent hot weather it’s hard to image the deluges we can get in this country and also the unrelenting consistency of wet weather sometimes. Because of this many businesses have needed to look at adding loading bay canopy extensions to their warehouse or existing loading bays to ensure all loading and unloading is carried out undercover. What’s the easiest, quickest and of course least expensive way though of getting these kind of extensions?

Loading bay canopies can come in many different forms, but one of the best types available at the moment in terms of ease and cost are aluminium framed structures. Aluminium is a very lightweight metal that gains strength from its ability to flex and non corrosive properties. Because of this it’s very easy to handle, transport and install, but will also withstand impact and loads and not rust over time.

Being so lightweight also means an aluminium structure doesn’t need the same kind of weight bearing as a steel structure so no foundations need to be laid. They can usually be built onto existing hard surfaces by bolting each frame leg to the ground. And, its these factors that create the significant time and cost savings.

As its extending facilities we are looking at here, it’s obviously important to be able to link the loading bay canopy to existing warehouses or loading bays. And, yes, it is possible to do this with aluminium structures creating a weather proof link for goods, vehicles and staff.

Aluminium framed canopies can usually be purchased or hired. This is because the simple construction method allows for easy dismantle and removal as well. They can though be used long term and as a cost-effective alternative to a permanent structure.

In terms of roof and wall cladding, it depends on the level of weather protection needed and use of the structure. The roofs are usually an industrial PVC material and walls can either be left open or filled with steel cladding. Sometimes a micromesh can be used for the walls to allow airflow and keep budgets down.

Leading UK packaging manufacturer, The Benson Group have used aluminium loading bay canopies at two of their UK sites. One was as a holding area for goods ready to be loaded and the other for actual loading and unloading. Both of these structures were linked to existing warehouse buildings and allowed the company to achieve huge time and cost savings when compared to a steel or more traditional structure.
