Canterbury College expands construction courses with the addition of a temporary building

The bespoke temporary building solution enabled the colleges’ Sheppey Campus to extend the Building & Construction courses on offer. Students can study diplomas in Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery, Site Carpentry or take a Multi-trades course that teaches the basics.

Established in 1947 Canterbury College has grown to be one of the largest Further and Higher Education Colleges in the area

The Building & Construction courses have enjoyed huge growth so funding was secured to extend the college facilities to accommodate the burgeoning numbers of students and diploma activities. Building contractors Benning Brothers were appointed due to their extensive experience in the sector, who in turn appointed Offset Architects. Together, both parties turned to temporary buildings as a potential solution after traditional buildings proved too expensive for the budget given.

Temporary buildings provided a more cost-effective solution

On-site space at the college was already squeezed and limited and, combined with intricate building plans, multi-party involvement and high expectations, this appeared to be a more complex project than normal. With the potential for escalating costs and the need to consider future expansion needs – Aganto were approached to provide a temporary building solution.

The temporary building needed to be linked to the college’s actual building

Sales manager for the region Ian Mackenzie, consulted with all involved and advised a bespoke sized 8.3m wide x 15m long x 4.2m high insulated temporary building. The temporary building was also linked to the college’s actual building, and installed on a new Benning Bros-designed concrete ring beam - the result of many co-partner detailed site meetings and visits to Aganto buildings in order to incorporate the features into their designs.

A viable and practical solution to a complex space issue

The building was of course insulated as it was to be used for pupils to carry out activities in, and also featured manually operated steel roller shutter doors and access pedestrian doors.

Ian explains:

This project is different to the norm in a variety of ways, including what it’s being used for, also with the number of partners involved. However, we made a great team and learned from each other’s strengths. The college was happy and that’s what it’s all about. Just another great example of Aganto’s flexibility in application and teamwork.

Bennings Brothers add:

The installation stage went well and the building went up quickly within a week and looked great with the end product being well received. This was a viable and practical solution to a space issue, which has now allowed the college to create additional covered areas for the forthcoming 2018 students.
