Travis Perkins is a leading company in the Builders’ Merchanting and Home Improvement markets, supplying more than 100,000 product lines to the UK building and construction industry. To demonstrate its commitment to the environment and reduce costs Travis Perkins launched a nationwide project to bring its waste processing in-house.
Waste processing building
Travis Perkins purchased three waste processing machines to sort and bale the cardboard that was collected from each branch after deliveries and returned to its central site at Northampton. The largest and most important piece of machinery was an Auto Baler, which is used by many of the major waste management companies. Once installed, the company needed a structure to be built around it so the operation remained undercover and secure.
Low cost temporary industrial buildings
Travis Perkins approached three temporary building companies. Aganto was chosen following a visit to a reference site and the knowledge and experience demonstrated by Aganto. The company built a 15m wide by 20m long temporary industrial building around the machinery to Travis Perkins’ specifications. The building has an eave height of 5.2m to accommodate the Auto Baler and two roller shutter doors for forklift access. As no level of insulation was required, single skin steel cladding was used for the walls together with a PVC roof system. Both systems offered reduced costs but no compromise on quality or durability. Travis Perkins opted to purchase the building as the new operation is a long-term project.
Waste management cost savings
Around 4 ½ tons of cardboard is processed into bales every day by Travis Perkins and a significant saving has been made by removing the skips from each branch. John Burgoyne, Maintenance Surveyor, Travis Perkins, commented:
