Gatwick Airport growth triggers investment in temporary building

As Gatwick Airport announces £1.1bn five-year plan to ramp up growth – one of its Air Services suppliers has invested in the long term hire of a large temporary building. The building provides 300m2 of maintenance workspace for its fleet of large airside luggage trailers. With a pressurised ‘24 hours a day schedule’ running 365 days a year and an increase in passengers, they needed to optimise operational efficiencies to meet the new growth demands.

On-site maintenance facilities reduce downtime

Having the temporary building as an ‘on-site maintenance facility’ has significantly reduced the downtime of equipment in need of servicing or repair. Previously their handling equipment needed to be transported to their off-site workshop close to Heathrow, this was time-consuming, expensive and inefficient.

The part insulated temporary building is designed to run all year round, so has thermal qualities within the floor, walls and roof. This means in the winter it provides the comfortable working conditions by retaining heat – but in the summer, when the sun shines directly on it, it is just as insulated from the heat.
